PCS Storage Deadlines Before a Tinker Home Move

Before temporary household-goods storage expires during a Tinker PCS move, ask the transportation office to confirm the shipment’s authorized storage dates, any days already used and the extension process. Coordinate the delivery request with the moving company and obtain a written answer before assuming extra storage is paid. A delayed home closing or a pending request does not itself establish an approved extension.

Identify the storage category and the actual authorization

Start with the shipment record and orders. Ask whether the goods are in storage-in-transit, commonly called SIT, and which entitlement applies to the traveler. Service members and civilian employees should not assume the same rules or allowance. Long-term non-temporary storage is a different arrangement.

Military OneSource directs moving households to the applicable entitlement rules and transportation contacts. For a Tinker move, the official installation household-goods page identifies the personal-property transportation office as a resource for shipment and storage questions. Use that office to confirm the actual authorization rather than borrowing a generic number from another family’s move.

Keep the shipment identifier and orders in the private file used for the inquiry. Public housing discussions do not need operational travel details, personal orders or the family’s full itinerary.

Put the recorded start and expiration on one calendar

Ask the office to identify the storage start date, the authorized last day and any earlier storage that counts toward the shipment’s allowance. Confirm whether the number being discussed is a total entitlement, remaining time or an already approved extension. Write down the answer in those terms so the family does not confuse them.

The controlling travel rules distinguish authorized storage from days that can become the traveler’s expense after the allowance ends without an approved extension. This article deliberately gives no universal number of paid days. The office must apply the current rules to the traveler and shipment.

For a hypothetical household buying near Midwest City, put the lender’s projected closing and the seller’s possession date on the same calendar. A closing date and a delivery-ready address may be different, especially when possession occurs later.

Request an extension before treating it as available

If the dates no longer work, ask the transportation office which request, supporting explanation and submission channel apply. Describe the actual reason and provide only the documentation requested through the appropriate private channel. Keep a copy of the submission and the date it was sent.

Then ask how approval or denial will be communicated. A conversation with the moving company or a submitted request is not the same as an authorized extension. If the response is still pending near expiration, ask the office about the next step and possible financial responsibility before allowing the decision to drift.

Do not assume that a housing delay always qualifies or that the agent, lender or seller can authorize government-funded storage. Those professionals can clarify transaction dates; the responsible transportation authority determines the entitlement.

Coordinate delivery early enough to be practical

Military OneSource warns that delivery from storage can take days or weeks after the request, depending on the circumstances. Work with the transportation service provider and the transportation office rather than assuming goods will arrive the day a house closes. Ask how to request delivery for the particular shipment and how a date is confirmed.

Check that the destination is actually ready: lawful possession, access arrangements and a person authorized to receive the shipment. Ask the provider what information is needed for stairs, parking or other access constraints. Do not direct a truck to a property simply because a purchase contract has been signed.

If the closing moves, update the people coordinating the shipment promptly. Keep a dated record of the requested delivery and the provider’s response so a planning assumption is not mistaken for a confirmed appointment.

Keep the backup plan separate from other PCS benefits

Storage, temporary lodging, non-temporary storage and an inconvenience claim have different purposes and rules. Do not assume one program automatically covers a cost created by another. Before arranging commercial storage or an extra move, ask what is authorized and what the family would personally owe.

Build a practical backup with confirmed figures: where essential belongings will be, what the family can access and who will make a decision if the purchase timeline changes. Avoid paying for a service based on an expectation of reimbursement that the responsible office has not confirmed.

Doug and Ronnie at OKC Metro Group can help align the home search, closing and possession schedule with the dates provided by your transportation office. Share the housing deadlines needed for that work, while keeping orders and benefit records in the proper channels. The useful outcome is a documented storage and delivery plan with a clear next action before the current authorization expires.

PCS entitlements depend on orders, traveler status and current rules. The transportation office must confirm the applicable authorization; this guide does not promise a storage allowance or reimbursement.
