Shipping a Motorcycle During a Tinker PCS Move

A motorcycle can sometimes travel with household goods during a military move instead of using a privately owned vehicle shipment. For a household moving to or from Tinker, the first step is to ask the transportation office which route fits the orders, destination and other vehicle plans. Do that before arranging pickup or assuming the motorcycle receives a separate government-paid shipment.

Military OneSource’s PCS entitlements guidance says motorcycles and dirt bikes can move with household goods within the continental United States, and their weight counts toward the authorized household-goods allowance. The route matters because it changes the planning questions, weight calculation and preparation instructions.

Choose the shipment route before booking services

List the motorcycle, any car you plan to ship, the origin, destination and proposed shipment dates. Take that list and the orders to the transportation office. Ask whether the motorcycle should be handled as household goods or as a privately owned vehicle, often called a POV, for this move.

The Military OneSource moving FAQ explains that a motorcycle or moped may be shipped as a POV when another vehicle is not being shipped at government expense under the same orders. Destination and authorization details still matter. Treat this as a question to resolve for the actual move, not an automatic entitlement to ship an additional vehicle.

Our vehicle-shipping authorization guide addresses the broader POV decision. Here, the additional task is choosing the motorcycle’s shipment category and preparing for the consequences of that choice.

Include the motorcycle in the household-goods weight plan

If the transportation office confirms household-goods shipment, add the motorcycle to the move inventory and weight discussion early. The authorized allowance is not increased simply because an item is a motorcycle. Ask how the transportation office wants the item described and what information the assigned mover needs before pickup.

Separate the motorcycle from riding gear, tools and other belongings when planning the inventory. This makes it easier to ask what can accompany the shipment, what must be packed separately and what restrictions apply. Do not rely on an estimate that was prepared before the motorcycle was disclosed.

For a family preparing a Tinker-area home for sale, this decision can affect the garage cleanout and loading schedule. Reserve the access the mover actually requests. Keep that schedule consistent with possession and key-transfer commitments so equipment is not stranded after the house becomes unavailable.

Get preparation instructions for shipping or storage

The entitlements guidance distinguishes preparation for shipment from preparation for storage, including fuel and battery handling. It also addresses secure attachments, tire inflation and fluid leaks. Those instructions should be confirmed for the actual service and motorcycle before work begins.

Request the mover’s written preparation instructions and resolve any inconsistency with the transportation office. Ask who performs required preparation, when it must be complete and what the driver will check. If mechanical work is needed, use someone qualified to perform it safely.

Do not assume an instruction remembered from a previous move applies unchanged to this one. A motorcycle entering storage and one moving directly to a destination may require different handling. Likewise, a household-goods arrangement should not be treated as identical to processing a vehicle through a POV shipping center.

Make the pickup inventory useful if something goes wrong

The official personal-property inventory guidance recommends documenting belongings and their condition and checking the mover’s inventory carefully. Use that process for the motorcycle and separately packed gear. Photograph the visible condition before pickup and keep the records available during the move.

Read the description and condition entries before signing. If an entry does not accurately describe what you see, ask that the discrepancy be recorded. Keep a copy of the completed inventory and the relevant move contacts. Avoid leaving the only copy in a box that travels with the shipment.

At delivery, compare the received items and condition against the records and follow the current reporting instructions for the shipment. This article does not establish a claim deadline or promise reimbursement. Obtain those requirements from the responsible move office and official instructions.

Connect the shipment answer to the housing calendar

Leave the transportation-office conversation with a recorded shipment category, preparation checklist, pickup contact and unresolved questions. Then coordinate garage access, temporary storage if authorized, home possession and your own transportation. A possible shipment date is not the same as a confirmed pickup.

Our Tinker PCS housing resources can help organize the real-estate side. Doug and Ronnie at OKC Metro Group can coordinate property access and housing dates around the transportation office’s confirmed plan. The orders and responsible military offices determine move entitlements.
