Check OKC Pet Limits Before Choosing Your Next Home

Contemporary homes along a residential street

If you are relocating with several dogs or cats, check the actual city jurisdiction and housing restrictions before choosing a home. Oklahoma City's published code limits a household to four dogs and four cats over six months old, with a kennel-license exception. That is not a rule for every city in the metro, and it does not override a lease or association restriction. Confirm an unusual situation with the city before committing.

Verify which city governs the address

An Oklahoma City mailing address alone is not the whole jurisdiction check. Use the property's municipal information and ask the relevant city when uncertain. Do this for each finalist in your home search rather than assuming nearby addresses share the same rules.

Create a property comparison sheet with the address, governing municipality and contact used for verification. For a household considering homes in different metro communities, leave the pet-rule field blank until each jurisdiction is checked. This guide explains Oklahoma City's published household rule; it does not assign the same number to Edmond, Norman, Moore, Bethany or an unincorporated area.

Count the animals by species and age

Section 8-37 uses four of each: dogs and cats over six months, per household. It makes the owner or occupant responsible for household violations. City of Oklahoma City: Municipal Code, Chapter 8, section 8-37 Do not read that as four pets combined, and do not assume each adult at the address receives a separate allowance.

Prepare a list showing species, age and which animals will actually live at the new home. If an animal will cross the age threshold soon after moving, include that future situation in your question. Avoid treating a temporary age difference as a permanent housing solution. Ask Animal Welfare about circumstances the published rule does not clearly resolve for you.

Check private restrictions separately

Request the lease, association documents or other applicable property restrictions before making a commitment. Ask for the actual written pet provisions rather than relying on a listing label such as pet-friendly. Compare allowed numbers, size or other conditions with your household's real needs.

Municipal permission and private housing permission are separate checks. Record each answer in its own column so a favorable city answer does not hide an unresolved lease question. If an assistance-animal accommodation or another legal issue applies, seek qualified guidance on that specific situation. This article does not determine the outcome of an accommodation request.

Do not assume a kennel license is automatic

The city code identifies an exception for households obtaining the kennel license described in Chapter 8. City of Oklahoma City: Municipal Code, Chapter 8, section 8-37 The existence of an exception does not establish that a particular property or proposal qualifies. Contact the city about the applicable process and any other requirements before relying on it.

For example, a household with five adult dogs should investigate the issue while comparing properties, not after unloading the moving truck. Ask what must be approved and when. Preserve the written response or application information. Avoid advertising the home as suitable for an expanded animal use until that use has been confirmed for the specific address.

Plan the first day at the property

The city's public guidance also addresses confinement and leashing, care and nuisance responsibilities. City of Oklahoma City: Keep Dogs Leashed or Confined When Outside in Oklahoma City Walk through the practical setup: where animals remain while doors are open, who supervises them during unloading and whether the enclosure actually keeps them secure. A large yard is not by itself a containment plan.

Check gates, access points and the moving crew's route before release into the yard. Coordinate any needed repair with the appropriate property owner or contractor. Keep pet records and supplies accessible during the move. State entry-health documents are another task; they do not replace these address-level housing checks.

Keep a written answer with the housing decision

Your final file should show the jurisdiction, household count and ages, private restrictions and any unresolved city question. The official Animal Welfare page is the starting point for current contact information.
