Verify authority before paying a deposit

For a broker, confirm broker registration and ask for the list of movers it uses. A U.S. DOT number by itself is not the finish line because a registered company may not be authorized to transport household goods.
Save dated screenshots or PDFs of the result with the quote. If the salesperson refuses to identify the legal entity, uses only a generic trade name, demands a large cash deposit or will not provide the federal consumer booklet, stop before the household is packed.
Make the estimate traceable to the carrier
A broker's estimate must be based on the tariff of the mover that will carry the shipment. Ask which carrier tariff and service assumptions support each charge, whether the estimate is binding or non-binding, and what could change after an in-person or permitted visual survey. Do not sign a blank inventory or accept a verbal promise that a different carrier will honor an unexplained price.
For a downsizing move, the inventory often changes as furniture is sold, donated or moved to storage. Send scope changes in writing and ask for a revised document before loading. Keep the original and every revision rather than replacing the earlier version.
Confirm the handoff before moving day
A legitimate broker should disclose the carriers it uses, but the household still needs to know which carrier accepted this shipment. Before the scheduled pickup, request the carrier's legal name, U.S. DOT number, contact information and written order for service. Compare that identity with the truck, crew paperwork and bill of lading at arrival.
If an unknown rental truck or differently named company appears, pause. Call the known company using independently verified contact information. Do not let urgency at the empty house convert an identity mismatch into consent.
Keep one decision file through delivery
Retain the broker agreement, carrier estimate, order for service, inventory, bill of lading, valuation selection, payment proof and contact log. Photograph signed documents before the truck leaves. Keep identity records, medication, closing papers and irreplaceable originals in personal custody.
The practical decision is whether the named broker and named carrier are both legitimate, whether their roles and prices are clear, and whether the handoff is documented before loading. That answer is separate from later delivery-delay, storage-conversion or damage-claim decisions.
